Young CEDA Seminar at Twente University, Enschede

Young CEDA recently (30 My 2016) organised its first seminar in eastern Netherlands, at Twente University, Enschede, to inform final-year students about the joys of working in the dredging and marine construction industry. The event was a great opportunity for students to hear from young professionals who shared their personal experiences and gave the audience an insight into their working day and career perspectives.

The region is renowned for its institutions, and universities of applied science, offering courses in civil and mechanical engineering. As a great catchment area for CEDA it was important to Young CEDA to make sure that students were well-informed about working in the dredging industry. In general the area has been a good source of interns and recent graduates that go on to work for CEDA corporate members.

Young CEDA nl 2016-30-05 EnschedeThe evening started with a welcome by Young CEDA chair, Arjan de Heer, and was followed by presentations from young professionals representing operations, engineering and R&D. Thijs Hagedoorn studied at Van Hall Larenstein and currently works for Boskalis. He talked about his traineeship and operational role as superintendent on projects like the Suez Canal and an aluminium mining project in Surinam. Niels Borgers, a former student from HAN Arnhem, talked about his consultant role at Witteveen+Bos supporting clients with expert knowledge during different project phases. Finally, there was a presentation from Klaas Slager who graduated from Twente University, and now works as a RD&I engineer at Damen Shipyards. Klaas told the audience about his role in developing shelf dredging equipment.

The event attracted 20 highly engaged students, who were able to hear from those who had taken the decisive step into the industry. The majority of those present were civil engineering students from universities of applied science from Groningen, Arnhem and Velp, and the Twente University, Enschede. It was a very successful evening which ended with drinks and networking in ConcepT, the student union bar.

This seminar was one of a number of events organised by Young CEDA to engage local civil and mechanical engineering students in the wealth of opportunities available in the dredging industry. Visit the Young CEDA events page for news of future events.

Young CEDA would like to thank Twente University and ConcepT for hosting this event.
