First Young CEDA Day in Germany

At the beginning of June Young CEDA Germany organized the first Young CEDA Day in Hamburg. An excursion at the port of Hamburg with young students from universities of Northern Germany to get them involved in the dredging industry.

The Port of Hamburg is one of the most important sea ports in Europe and the logistics Centre for the North of Germany and as such one of the supports for economic growth. Around 10,000 ships a year use the Port of Hamburg. Nearly 1,700 transport companies have their head office and twenty of the twenty five largest liner shipping companies in the world have their European head office or a subsidiary in Hamburg. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is active in the Port of Hamburg wherever efficiency, safety and economy are important.

On June 5th 2014 HPA welcomed 26 students of engineering sciences from four German universities (Hannover, Oldenburg, Lübeck, Suderburg) for an excursion. Young CEDA invited them to the port of Hamburg to show them the world of dredging and it’s side issues.

At the introduction some professionals from the HPA gave speeches about working in the dredging industry. Thereby they all were introduced in the different working fields of the industry and its challenges.

After a short break all participants enjoyed a special boat trip focused on dredging equipment. In addition we were also be witnessed of the drop of “Christophe Colomb” from the shipping company CMA CGM, one of the largest container ships in the world.

At the End of the trip the group arrived at the sediment treatment plant of the HPA named “METHA”. There sediments of the port of Hamburg are treated since 1993. On site they were guided through the different parts of the plant, where the students once more could see the things they were introduced in the speeches in the morning.

At the end of the day all participants where excited about the excursion. Another Young CEDA day will follow that is for sure.
