CEDA session at Europort on Energy transition and sustainability in the dredging sector
This is an ARCHIVED EVENT
CEDA Members can download the presentations here, you need to SIGN IN firstDuring the Europort Exhibition on 4 November from 11.00-11.45 at the Green Stage, Bernardete Goncalves Castro, Manager R&D/ Head of Sustainability at Royal IHC will give a presentation on behalf of CEDA on Energy transition and sustainability in the dredging sector.
Dredging vessels are uniquely complex workboats, characterised by high installed power within a compact footprint. They are often deployed globally, operating near coastlines or inland waterways.
The mission-critical equipment onboard places significant demands on the power supply and is subject to continuous load fluctuations. These factors present additional challenges for decarbonising this vessel type, particularly in terms of operational autonomy, energy requirements, and bunkering infrastructure.
CEDA (Central European Dredging Association) has established a dedicated decarbonisation commission to support the sector in addressing these challenges. Representing both CEDA and the workgroup, Royal IHC, a Dutch shipbuilder, shares insights into the association’s progress and offers its perspective as a technology leader in shipbuilding.
Beyond the adoption of zero-emission equipment, another key pillar of decarbonisation is the sustainable protection of coastlines through environmentally conscious project practices. The "Building with Nature” approach is highlighted, showcasing iconic projects that contribute to the long-term sustainability of coastal and delta regions.
By combining nature-based solutions with zero-emission vessels, European contractors are well-positioned to meet the future global demand for sustainable waterway and coastal infrastructure.
