The Isle of Wight is a UK county with a population of over 140,000 people. All access to the Island is via three private ferry operators and at peak periods one-way fares can be over £100. The Island has a long legacy of cultural and industrial excellence combined with some of the most beautiful landscapes in the UK. Yet, despite this and being less than 4 miles from Portsmouth and Southampton, two of the most vibrant cities on the south coast, the Island economy is struggling. Poor accessibility is a major factor in this poor economic performance and social wellbeing.

The Solent Tunnel proposal is to construct a bored tunnel from the Isle of Wight to the M27, with an access portal at the Daedalus Enterprise Zone on the Gosport peninsula. Tim Cooper, Associate Partner at CPC Project Services and Director of Able Connections, will consider how the scheme is aligned with current government policy, and the way in which different policy options (such as land use, freight, public transport and electric vehicles) impact upon the engineering decisions.
