Belgian dredging and marine engineering company DEME and Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial have won a contract to build a new container terminal at the Polish port of Gdansk. The contract includes dredging, reclamation works and construction of a new pier and mooring facility.

Ferrovial’s Polish construction subsidiary Budimex and DEME will deliver the project. DEME will lead dredging and reclamation works to create a 360,000sq m platform for the new terminal, while Budimex will build the quay, drainage works and a 700m mooring front for large container ships.

DEME Group’s deputy area director for Europe, Laurent Closset said: “This contract is the second major project for DEME in Poland in recent years, following the successful modernisation of the Świnoujście-Szczecin Fairway, which opened in May. The new terminal will mark a new era for container handling in the Baltic region.”

The new terminal will expand the port’s capacity from 3 million to 4.5 million containers a year. It will include a deep-water quay measuring 717m long and 17.5m deep as well as a 365,000sq m dockyard area.

Container terminal operator DCT Gdansk has invested €417 million in the project, with DEME valuing its share of the contract at €50-150 million. Works will start in September and will be completed by early 2023.

DCT Gdańsk is the biggest container terminal in the Baltic Sea. with two deep-water terminals handling over 600 vessels annually, including 100 calls by ultra-large container ships.

The new terminal is expected to open in 2024 and will be fully operational by the second quarter of 2025.
