Netherland-based marine engineering company Van Oord has put its weight behind the industry’s climate adaptation conversation through a knowledge-sharing forum designed to encourage cross-industry solutions to protect societies and regions most at risk from climate change.

Launched in October 2020, the Climate Adaptation Action Plan consists of blogs, videos and podcasts, to generate conversations and solutions. It is formed of three key elements – Climate Risk Overview, Climate Adaptation Solutions and Knowledge Hub.  Through the plan Van Oord plans to “scale up the world’s efforts in adapting to the inevitable effects of climate change,” it said on its website.

As part of the plan, on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 of January Van Oord will participating in the Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 hosted by the Netherlands. At the event, Van Oord will officially launch its Climate Risk Overview.

Speaking to CEDA Industry News, a Van Oord spokesperson said: “Our Climate Adaptation Action Plan is meant to encourage meaningful dialogue between relevant parties and should result in solutions to create a better world for future generations.

“The goal of the action plan is for Van Oord to use its capabilities, together with our partners, to provide solutions to protect coastal societies and ecosystems most at risk from the challenges presented by climate change”.

The action plan was inspired by a speech delivered in 2018 at a Van Oord-hosted event by Christiana Figueres, the former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In her speech Figueres called on everyone, including large companies, to action to protect those living in the most vulnerable coastal communities, through knowledge and solutions sharing.
