Antwerp and the Scheldt: How Water, Infrastructure and Governance Shape the Port’s Future

2026-05-05

Johan Klaps – Vice Mayor for the Port and Economy of the City of Antwerp and President of the Board of Port of Antwerp-Bruges – will be a speaker at the CEDA Dredging Days. In his speech he will address how the city’s location along the Scheldt has shaped its history and the impact this has had in terms of hydropolitics. Economic growth consistently goes hand in hand with major infrastructure works, serving both the economy and the city’s livability. Since the Oosterweel works, this latter aspect has become increasingly important, making environmental management indispensable. With a view to ECA (Extra Container capacity Antwerp), this is a key consideration for the dredging sector.

This session marks the start of a series of sessions that will explore ECA and Oosterweel in greater depth.
