Abstract: Dual fuel engines are an interesting option for application in dredging vessels. With the application of DF engines, dredging vessels are ready for the future and can comply with the current and upcoming emission legislation. The uncertainty of the oil price and its availability makes LNG also an interesting option from the fuel cost perspective. The application of DF engines on dredging vessels has some challenges, one of these challenges is the dynamic loading caused by the nature of the dredging process. In this study, the challenges of applying the LNG DF engines on dredgers as well as (potential) solutions are descripted. The results of this study were used for a solution which allows natural gas powered dredging vessels to cope with the dynamic loading caused by the dredging process. The application of DF engines in the dredging industry is feasible with the solutions presented in this paper.
