Abstract

"Grab type dredgers are widely used in Japan as a dredging method. Unlike pump type dredgers they are suita-ble for dredging in busy routes, dredging deep water depths and can deal with various soil types. However, due to recent trends and growing demands for environmental conservation a reduction of fuel con-sumption is required to realize 'reductions in emissions of CO2 and SOX'. In public construction works in Japan, 'Efficient construction', 'Visualization of construction works' and 'Economic improvement are re-quired utilizing 'i-Construction' and ICT (Information Construction and communication Technology) advocat-ed by the MLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism). To cope with such social demands, Toyo Construction is building an environment-friendly type dredger. This vessel is capable of realizing a 'Re-duction of fuel consumption and the emission of CO2 and SOX' utilizing a 'Hybrid Drive' and a 'Surplus Electric Power Storage System' to cope with environmental demands. Also with the 'Grab Dredging Total Management System' developed by TOYO construction, this vessel is capable of realizing 'Efficient construction' and the 'Prevention of water pollution' principles that respond to the various needs and construction conditions. Main features of the vessel are as follows: - Equipped with a 'Hybrid drive' for surplus energy recovery and storage during the time of dredging. - Equipped with a 'Surplus Electric Power Storage System' for surplus energy recovery and storage during the time of running the Main Generator. - An environmentally friendly closed type bucket 'Eco-Grab', capable of suppressing turbidity in the sea water at the time of dredging. - Equipped with a '3D Grab Bucket' and a '3D Dredge Construction Management System' to improve dredging efficiency. This paper will describe individual features of the new grab dredger and the development results for each function."
