Safety aspects on Draghead Cleaning

Abstract

Draghead cleaning operations on a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHDs) is a risky operation that is often underestimated. In the recent past, several incidents underscored the hazardous nature of this routine, yet high-risk task, asking for a comprehensive investigation and interactive toolbox campaign involving TSHD captains. The campaign aimed to identify root causes of incidents, review existing preventive measures, and develop actionable improvements. The investigation revealed four primary root causes: (1) space constraints limiting crew evacuation during emergencies, (2) insufficient knowledge or training regarding procedures and mitigation measures, (3) use of incorrect tools for specific debris types, and (4) fatigue or reduced vigilance due to routine. These factors collectively increase the likelihood of accidents during draghead cleaning. To address these issues, both short-term and longer-term mitigation actions were set up. Short-term measures include the introduction of impact-reducing mats to prevent uncontrolled bouncing of debris, task-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) such as leg protection and cut-resistant sleeves, and the development of a task-specific "Take 5" risk assessment card. Additionally, a fleet-wide "Hazard Hunt" is being initiated to maintain crew awareness, and project-specific preparation is emphasized to minimize debris in dragheads on a project specific basis. Longer-term actions focus on engineering and design improvements. Extended work platforms to increase safe working and escape areas have been introduced. Reviewing and optimizing grid designs to prevent clogging and facilitate safer cleaning, and exploring self-cleaning draghead. We also looked further into a new design for the clay trays to reduce bouncing, eliminate trip hazards and to make sure cleaning of the tray can be done in a safe manner. While draghead cleaning cannot be entirely eliminated, a combination of hazard elimination, proper tools and PPE, heightened awareness, and improved workspace design will significantly reduce incident rates.
