Abstract: In virtually all coastal and offshore marine construction projects the positioning systems are based on GPS to position and orientate the dredger or barge as well as the survey boats.

This paper discusses the latest proven DGPS and software systems that are used on many high profile projects worldwide. The core technology - GPS - is introduced and the various systems, operating modes and accuracies from metre to centimetre level are explained. The issues related to centimetre accuracy DGPS, called DGPS-Real Time Kinematic (DGPS-RTK), are highlighted especially since these systems are so accurate in the vertical dimension also.

The paper explains the advantages of then integrating the GPS sensors into a Windows software package to yield extra information, such as attitude/orientation, and to display the data in a manner that construction personnel can readily understand.

A number of worldwide examples are introduced which show the application of GPS and software on a dredger in New Zealand, the Øresund link in Sweden, coastal sewage outfall trench construction in Puerto Rica and raked piling in Singapore.
