Abstract: Shashi reach in the Middle Yangtze River is an example of a typical braided shoal reach. Using physical model tests and mathematical model calculations, together with the knowledge from engineering practice, an in-depth and careful analysis of the regularity of back-silting in the dredged area of this reach and effects of dredging is made. Based on the predicted regularity for this reach to change and its development trends after the creation of Three Gorges Reservoir, the proper timing and a scheme for executing dredging operation under the conditions of special bed boundaries and complicated flow structures is presented. Hence, the contradiction between large back-silting volume, high cost and waterway maintenance will be effectively solved.

This paper not only studies back-silting regularity and dredging schemes under complex conditions, but also provides guidance for dredging this reach. It also provides a reference for the dredging in similar site conditions.
