Reclamation of dredged material and the end use of existing disposal facilities

Abstract: Contaminated dredged material continues to be routinely disposed in confined disposal facilities. Considerable research and monitoring has been devoted to confined disposal facilities, regarding design, assessment and management of environmental risks. Guidelines on environmental impacts and design of confined disposal facilities have been produced by PIANC and CEDA. A number of countries have contributed to the design and management knowledge base of confined disposal sites. There is, however, little international technical guidance and state-of-the-art information on long-term management, dredged material use, and transformation to an acceptable end use of existing confined disposal facilities.
A PIANC working group (Envicom, WG 11) started working on producing such guidelines in 2003. Although only at the beginning of its task, the group thought that the Wodcon conference is a good opportunity to present the first results and the framework of the guidelines that it is working on. The guidelines will include strategies and technical guidance for long-term management, site end use and transformation options and will provide recommendations for planning and design of new confined disposal facilities and risk communication.
