Abstract: In the near future large-scale dredging is planned in the Southwestern part of the Netherlands, for reasons of navigation, flood control and remediation. The present disposal capacity is not adequate to deal with these large amounts of contaminated dredged material. That is why a new sub-aquatic confined disposal facility (CDF) is planned in the so-called "Hollandsch Diep" and a former sandpit (Cromstrijen) will be also used for sub-aquatic disposal.
For these new confined disposal sites all stakeholders and the people living in the neighbourhood were involved in the process of planning and design to gain public support.
An Environmental Impact Assessment study was carried out taking into account sediment quantity&quality, impacts and effects on the environment, treatment, layout, organisation and management.
A design was made for a state of the art sub-aquatic CDF surrounded by a ring-dike with a capacity of 10 million cubic meters of contaminated dredged material. Facilities for treatment, such as sand-separation, are planned with the purpose to save disposal capacity and to produce materials for beneficial use.
The results of the EIA-study and the design by modern visualisation techniques (virtual reality) will be presented at the congress. The pit Cromstrijen is already in operation for the storage of 10 million m3 of dredged material.
