Abstract: Ocean environmental issues have been highlighted in Japan lately, particularly in inland sea regions.

"Ariake Kai" and "Yatsushiro Kai" are the famous inland seas in the Kyushu district in Japan. These seas are enclosed areas making the environmental conditions worse with many kinds of debris and artificialities flowing into the sea from the rivers whenever the rivers rise.

Recently the pollution level has increase and the area has deteriorated. Counter-measures against the pollution problems have been investigated by Japanese government offices such as the Kyushu Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in Japan, which is the authority for the governance in this region.

"KAIKI" which is a catamaran type, advanced anti-pollution vessel, has been designed and constructed in order to solve the environmental issues in this region.

The main functions of the Vessel are to recover the floating debris and to periodically investigate the quality of the water and the soil on the seabed.

The main hull is made of an aluminum alloy and has a water jet propulsion system. The debris recovery system is the skipper type recovery system with detachable containers.

In addition, the vessel is equipped with various kinds of observation equipments.

The paper introduces the remarkable design features of this advanced anti-pollution vessel "KAIKI".
