Abstract: In the UK annual trade brought through our ports is about 600 million tonnes. In a typical year the mass of material dredged to facilitate navigation to and from these ports is about 30-40 million tonnes. The authors have drawn upon existing public data sources relating to port operations and navigation dredging quantities to produce a relatively simple overview of the position at the main ports in England and Wales in terms of port trade and navigational dredging quantities. The picture presented is revealing at many levels. As an overview it provides an insight into the spatially varying distribution of port activity and the varying degree of importance of sedimentation processes in England and Wales. In more detail it demonstrates some of the differences between major ports which have developed historically and some of our more recently selected sites with natural deep water.
