Abstract: The paper deals with the engineering and construction challenges encountered during the detailed design and execution phase of the SARB project currently in progress. A project executed by the DI-MEDCO JV for ADMA OPCO comprising the construction of two offshore artificial islands in the Arabian Gulf. It shall deal with following engineering aspects:
-
Satisfying the overtopping criteria without the use of a crown wall and a minimal difference between the crest level of the edge protection and the reclamation level, thus allowing for a good ventilation of the island as an intrinsic mitigation for the H2S hazard faced during operations. A solution has been found in using a draining channel, designed to evacuate the overtopping green water during extreme events.
-
Keeping the wave agitation in the harbour within acceptable working parameters
-
Design of toe mound and discrepancies with relevant empirical formulas
-
Achieving an acceptable factor of safety against liquefaction of the fill and failure of the edge protection during an earthquake event by means of vibrocompaction.
-
Design of quay wall foundation considering short and long term settlements under applied loads.
In the construction of the island the following challenges were met:
-
A traditional quarry run core of the edge protection is replaced by a revetment covered sand slope, thus reducing the quantity of quarry run material and reducing costs/execution time of the project. Temporary works like overfilling of the reclamation and the construction of a temporary bund were needed to enable this construction method by minimizing the effects of the exposure of the sand fill reclamation to wave action / tide effect in open sea conditions. Trimming of the slopes is done by means of cutter suction dredger
-
Construction of quay wall considering more stringent tolerance than applicable standards
The paper shall as well touch upon the specific equipment conceived for this project.
