Abstract: The Incheon Bridge Project is an on-going mega bridge project that will connect Incheon International Airport on Yongjong Island with Songdo City within the Incheon Free Economic Zone. When completed in 2009, the 12.3 km bridge will become the longest bridge in Korea. Although a section consists of the symbolic cable-stayed bridge that will have a 74 m high navigational clearance to allow ocean going vessels of up to 100,000 tons to enter and leave the Port of Incheon, 8.7 km of the sea crossing consists of concrete box girder viaducts built in shallow water over tidal mud flats. An artificial island was constructed to provide a construction platform over shallow areas. Geotextile tubes were used as reclamation dykes over soft estuarial deposits, stacked in tiers up to about 7 m in height. The geotextile tubes were filled with sand delivered by barges and using a slurry-mixing and pumping setup. The artificial island was constructed using residual soil backfill trucked to site. Therefore the construction of the artificial island did not involve any dredging works at site. The installation of geotextile tubes began in late April 2006 and was completed by December 2006.
