Abstract : I- Presentation of the Senegalese coastal zone
Definition of the Senegalese coastal zone. Characteristics of the Senegalese coastal zone.
II- Socio-economic importance of the Senegalese coastal zone
The Senegalese coastal fringe is inhabited by more than 50 % of the national population. Fishing and tourism which constitute nowadays the lungs of the national economy rest on the ocean environment and the coastal zone.
III- Legal and institutional framework for the management of the Senegalese coastal zone
There are International Conventions ratified by Senegal and national legislative texts and regulations drawn up within the framework of the management and protection of the littoral.
Institutions intervening in coastal zone management.
IV- Problems identified in the coastal zone
The Senegalese littoral, like the whole of the African littoral, is in an alarming state of degradation due to:
  • Significant erosion of the coasts;
  • Industrial and domestic pollution;
  • Mining (marine sand);
  • Anarchical occupancy.
V- Undertaken Activities and programs
There are Projects and programs undertaken at the national and sub-regional levels:
- Development of a National emergency Response Plan in case of marine pollution;
- Works of coastal protection in certain zones of the Senegalese littoral;
- Rehabilitation Project of the Hann bay ;
- Sub-regional programmes of protection of the littoral: the coastal erosion control program of the UEMOA, programs for vulnerability adjustment of the coastal zone to the Climatic Changes in West Africa (Project ACCC), etc.
VI- Constraints
  • lack of a framework for the integrated management of the littoral;
  • Non respect of certain regulations;
  • Etc.
