Abstract: Considerable progress in the field of training programs and the use of dredge simulators have been made for Human Resource Management (HRM) during the last years. Parallel to this development the use of central monitoring, controls and data logging were adapted to use the available computer technology to generate a realistic virtual dredge process.
This paper serves to update the status of the technology involved and describes HRM support systems. Also the involved equipment currently available, to enhance the productivity, cost effectiveness and accountability of crew members, is described. Equipment is used for cutter dredgers as well as for hopper dredgers.
Applications of dredger simulators as training tool, within a complete dredge crew training program, are discussed as well as experiences with embedded instrumentation and data logging packages for cutter dredgers and hopper dredgers, as used in several recently commissioned dredge simulators.
In addition to an ergonomic simulator and realistic virtual views for the trainee also the use of dredge track presentation systems (DTPS) for positioning, dredgejob progress and datalogging is extensively deliberated. This includes the latest management tool; The on line data transfer to a shore based datacollection and analysis desk, to allow the local governmental principal to have an actual view on the progress of the dredge job.
Nowadays modern dredging companies and port authorities can not operate efficiently without use of well trained crews who can use modern dredge equipment like DGPS positioning, accurate and reliable production and progress measurements, radio telemetry and powerful multi functional software tools like DTPS.
Final part of the discussion in this paper is the position of education, training and possible aid of a simulator setup in the perspective of a dredge organization, for moving progress in efficient dredging.
