In memory of Rewert Wurpts

2022-03-25

It is with great sadness that we have to pass on the news that Rewert Wurpts, a long-standing and much valued member of the dredging community and CEDA, died at the age of 80.

A hydraulic engineer from Germany, Rewert started his career in 1967 at the dredging division of Ph. Holzmann and worked on dredging projects worldwide. In 1986 he went to work at the State Government of Niedersachsen, where he was responsible for R&D, specifically for dredging and surveying for the port of Emden.  He was also well-known in the dredging community for his research relating to the definition of the nautical depth in fluid mud by aid of rheological properties and the practical consequences for maintenance dredging.

Rewert’s enthusiasm for dredging brought him to CEDA early on, where he played an important role in introducing German colleagues and organisations to CEDA. He served on the CEDA Board from 1992 to 2008, acting as President from 2000. He was instrumental to the outstanding success of WODCON XVII, in 2004, in Hamburg, Germany.

Rewert will be fondly remembered by his many friends in CEDA as a wise, thoughtful, knowledgeable and very kind man, full of entertaining stories, and with a great sense of humor.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Rewert’s family and the many others mourning his recent passing.
